The Royle Family stars reunite for heartbreaking documentary about late co-star Caroline Aherne
THE Royle Family stars are set to reunite for a heartbreaking tribute to their late co-star Caroline Aherne.
The beloved comedy series originally ran between 1998 and 2000 and has had numerous specials.
It followed the lives of the Royle family who lived on a council estate, with Caroline playing the role of Denise.
Aherne co-created the series alongside actor and Gogglebox narrator Craig Cash.
And now following Caroline’s tragic death in 2016 with lung cancer, some of the show’s cast will reunite in her honour.
Caroline Aherne: Comedy Queen will document the star’s life and work featuring unseen photographs and videos.
The film will carry contributions from The Royle Family’s cast in tribute to Caroline.
It will air on BBC Two as part of their Arena series and feature stars including Steve Coogan, Jon Thompson and Sue Johnston.
Caroline had previously beaten lung cancer before the disease returned and she passed away aged 52.
The Mrs Merton star had told friends and family of her devastating diagnosis but asked them to keep the news under wraps.
She had been battling the cruel disease for years and had told pals: “I don’t want a fuss.”
Caroline was married to former New Order bassist Peter Hook for three years until their divorce in 1997.
After being thrust into the limelight she had struggled to deal with the pressures of fame.
The star suffered from drink problems and depression and was admitted to rehab following a suicide attempt in 1998 but recovered to co-write The Royle Family.
