Mary Trump urges action that would leave her uncle's finances crippled

Donald Trump's niece says she thinks the Federal Election Commission should be persuaded to upend how campaigns spend political donations sent to his campaign, Newsweek reported Wednesday.

While it's currently legal for political campaigns to use donations for legal fees, Mary Trump says, that if that changes, "his political ambitions would be ruined."

And she's urging people to contact the Federal Election Commission and urge it not to let it continue. She said allowing donations be used on legal costs is down to the FEC's lack of enforcement.

According to Newsweek, Trump's Save America political action committee has spent more than $20 million on legal bills just during the first half of this year — an amount that exceeds spending by the Republican National Committee, Democratic National Committee and National Republican Senatorial Committee combined.

In a Substack post, Mary Trump wrote that her uncle is able to use the donor money for legal bills due to a lack of enforcement by the Federal Election Commission (FEC).

University of Miami law professor Frances Hill told Newsweek that, "Everything now is so over-mingled that the FEC has no place carved out in the law that would allow it to do anything at all about anyone's use of money in a political campaign."

"Everyone has gotten used to utter corruption," Hill said. "And I'm not saying every candidate is utterly corrupt, but the idea that we can trace that money is wishful thinking. It's just a situation where people who might have something good about them have just lowered themselves to play in this arena of total badness."
