Ahmad Wali Haqmal, the spokesperson for the Taliban’s Ministry of Finance, has announced that the World Bank’s office will become operational in Afghanistan within a month.
According to Haqmal, the World Bank will restart 45 incomplete projects in Afghanistan that were halted when the Taliban took control in August 2021.
He made these statements during an interview with Tolo News on Tuesday. He stated, “Following our continuous negotiations in the past year, the World Bank has agreed to initially fund half-completed projects.”
The Taliban representative mentioned that the World Bank has committed to commence project payments by the month of April 2024.
In the year 2021-2022, the World Bank suspended all of its projects in Afghanistan, and in 2022-2023, it resumed some of its projects in the country.
World Bank projects in Afghanistan primarily target key sectors including infrastructure, construction, healthcare, energy, and agriculture. These initiatives aim to promote development and improve the country’s essential services and infrastructure.
These projects play a vital role in addressing Afghanistan’s pressing needs, from building and maintaining critical infrastructure to enhancing healthcare services, boosting energy access, and supporting agricultural development.
