The 69p drink that experts swear is all you need to keep warm at night without turning the heating on
WITH temperatures taking a dramatic dip and many of us reluctant to turn on our heating, lots of us are looking for cheap ways to stay warm this winter.
And luckily for you, if you want to feel warm and cosy in bed, whilst keeping your energy costs down, you’ve come to the right place.
Sleep experts at Online-Bedrooms.co.uk have revealed their seven tips for staying warm when getting to sleep during the colder months.
And one hack could cost you as little as 69p – and you’ve most likely already got the answer in your fridge already.
Not only this, but the position of your bed could make a huge difference to how warm you feel too – yes, you heard that correctly.
Nic Shacklock, from Online-Bedrooms.co.uk, explained: “Many of us really struggle when getting to bed at night during the winter. It’s a horrible feeling when you wake up in the middle of the night because of the cold.
“But there are several things you can do to keep your bed warm during the night rather than switching on the heating, which can get extremely expensive.
“Use a hot water bottle or heated blanket, and wear several layers rather than one thick jumper.
“Move your bed away from the window to stay away from the cold seeping through and drink a warm milky drink before going to sleep.”
Thanks to Nic, here are seven tips to stay warm in bed this winter.
Get drinking
It might be something you’ve probably overlooked, but Nic stressed that drinking something warm and milky before bed will ensure you stay warmer for longer.
He added: “To keep warm before going to sleep, have a warm milky drink in the evening.
“The drink will warm the body from the inside, and milk contains tryptophan which helps the body prepare for sleeping.”
If you’ve run out of milk and want to get some to try this idea out, you can pick up milk for just 69p.
Layer it up
If you’re not a fan of hot drinks, here’s some other tips to try.
For those that like to sleep naked, or simply wear just a pair of pyjamas, it’s time for a re-think.
Nic said: “Rather than wearing one layer of thick clothing to bed, having several items of thinner fabrics will trap the heat in between each layer and to keep the body warm overnight.”
Materials are key
Not only is layering important, but Nic also stressed that you need to ensure you’re wearing the correct materials.
He advised: “Some of the best materials for keeping warm are silk, cotton and wool, rather than synthetic fabrics.
“Wear layers of lightweight pyjamas and jumpers to bed, with woollen blankets and cotton sheets.”
Hot, hot, hot!
Not only this, but Nic stressed that hot water bottles are essential.
He wrote: “Rather than sleeping with the heating on, warm your bed before getting in with a hot water bottle.
“The heat will keep the blood flowing around the body and help you get a relaxing night sleep.”
Bag a blanket
As well as this, he also urged people to get a heated blanket too.
He continued: “Heated electric blankets are cheap to run and are a really effective way at keeping yourself and your bed warm throughout the night.
“Many blankets allow you to set a timer to automatically turn off after a few hours.”
Get your socks on
If you haven’t got any already, you’ll want to get your hands on some fluffy socks to stay warm this winter.
Nic shared: “Our feet can become much colder more quickly than other parts of the body due to less circulation.
“Thermal, knitted or fluffy socks are great for keeping the warmth in.”
Bedder believe it
And if that wasn’t enough, according to Nic, the position of your bed can affect how warm you stay too.
He claimed: “If your bed is near a window the cold from the outside can seep through and affect your sleep, even if it is double-glazed.
“Consider moving your bed away from the window for a warmer night’s sleep.”
