Julia Louis-Dreyfus (‘You Hurt My Feelings’) on the cusp of her second Golden Globes film nomination
Although best known as a television actress and the record-holder of the most consecutive Comedy Best Actress Emmy Awards for “Veep,” Julia Louis-Dreyfus has steadily been building her film credentials. Her first collaboration with filmmaker Nicole Holofcener in “Enough Said” established her as a serious film star and earned her accolades, including a Critics Choice bid and her first Golden Globe nomination for a film. This year, the reunion of the writer-director and star in “You Hurt My Feelings” has the veteran on track for her second Globes film nomination.
According to our current combined odds, Louis-Dreyfus will just make it into the Comedy/Musical Actress race in the sixth slot with a commanding lead over those further down the rankings. It certainly helps that the Globes have expanded the acting categories from five to six nominees this year, which could land the comedian a place in the competitive race that will likely also feature Emma Stone (“Poor Things”), Margot Robbie (“Barbie”), Fantasia Barrino (“The Color Purple”), Jennifer Lawrence (“No Hard Feelings”), and Natalie Portman (“May December”). 12 of our 16 Experts and seven of our 11 Editors bank on Louis-Dreyfus to nab a spot in the category, which would come exactly 10 years after her first movie nomination.

A nomination certainly wouldn’t be unexpected, considering how much the past members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association have recognized Louis-Dreyfus’ work on television. She is a past Globe winner, after all, but that victory dates back to her very first nomination 30 years ago for “Seinfeld.” She subsequently earned another nom for the hit sitcom, one for “The New Adventures of Old Christine,” for which she won an Emmy, and five nominations for “Veep,” though she shockingly never took home an award for the role of Selina Meyer despite dominating the Emmys and reaping three Screen Actors Guild Awards.
Louis-Dreyfus’ role in “Your Hurt My Feelings” received universal acclaim from critics. She stars as Beth, a writer whose memoir had respectable success and who is writing a novel as her second offering. Her marriage to Don (Tobias Menzies) is turned upside down when she overhears him in conversation with his brother-in-law (Arian Moayed) expressing how much he dislikes her new book, despite all of the encouragement he has given her. Emily Zemler (Observer) wrote, “Louis-Dreyfus is (obviously) pitch perfect and hilariously relatable as Beth.” Peter Travers (ABC News) said, “Louis-Dreyfus nails every nuance as Beth.” Wesley Morris (New York Times) observed, “Louis-Dreyfus knows how to find real pathos in a hurry. She’s a pro at putting across Holofcener’s casually cranky snobbery.” Richard Roeper (Chicago Sun Times) noted that the actress “delivers smashingly good work.”

If Louis-Dreyfus does break through with her second nomination, how likely is it that she will pull off an upset over the heavyweights in the category? Not very, considering how often this trophy goes to a likely Oscar contender. Yes, performers including Rosamund Pike (“I Care a Lot”), Rachel Zegler (“West Side Story”), and Awkwafina (“The Farewell”) have prevailed here even when they didn’t go on to earn Oscar nominations, but many recent winners in this category have gone on to earn Academy Awards bids, including Saoirse Ronan (“Lady Bird”), Jennifer Lawrence (“Joy”), Amy Adams (“American Hustle”), Michelle Williams (“My Week with Marilyn”) and Annette Bening (“The Kids Are All Right”). Sometimes, they even go on to take home the top Oscar prize, like Michelle Yeoh (“Everything Everywhere All At Once”), Olivia Colman (“The Favourite”), Emma Stone (“La La Land”), and Lawrence (“Silver Linings Playbook”).
