NBC’s “The Today Show” will come to a Connecticut town as part of its “Merriest Main Street” holiday series on Tuesday Dec. 12, according to a state lawmaker who is in the know..
In Essex, “the program, which has started the morning for countless Americans for more than 70 years, will showcase Ivoryton Illuminations and will broadcast live from the Ivoryton Playhouse at 103 Main Street, Ivoryton,” according to state Sen. Norm Needleman, D-Essex.
The broadcast “will operate rain or shine, so attendees should wear warm holiday attire accordingly,” Needleman said in an email.
He said that “The Today Show” starts its broadcast at 7 a.m., anyone who wants to be part of the occasion should arrive by 6 a.m. “bright and early on Tuesday.”

On the Essex Steam Train and Riverboat, enjoy 2-1/2-hour narrated excursion through the Connecticut River Valley. At the historic 1892 Essex Station, you will board vintage rail cars pulled by an authentic steam locomotive. The train chugs through the countryside to Deep River Landing, where you are escorted onto the "Becky Thatcher" Riverboat. During the one-hour cruise along the Connecticut River, you will view historic landmarks such as Gillette Castle and Goodspeed Opera House. When "Becky" returns to Deep River Landing, the steam train welcomes you for the return trip to Essex Station.

A popular tourist attraction, the more than century-old Essex steam train includes vintage rail cars pulled by a steam locomotive that takes passengers on a 12-mile narrated journey through Deep River and Chester. Passengers then board the Becky Thatcher riverboat for a 75-minute Connecticut River cruise, passing such landmarks as Gillette Castle and Goodspeed Opera House.
“I’m excited for the rest of the nation to see proof of what we already know: Essex is one of the most beautiful towns in Connecticut and the United States. It’s a proud moment for us to receive this national attention,” said Needleman, who also is first selectman of Essex.
“We need a big crowd on hand to cheer and represent Essex on Tuesday morning, and I invite anyone and everyone who wants to join us to come bright and early.”
Needleman also noted, for those not familiar with the shoreline area town, that Essex is “widely regarded for its beauty and holiday cheer, including the North Pole Express at the Essex Steam Train and Riverboat, which is already sold out for the 2023 holiday season.”
