School translators are ‘shining stars’ of public education | READER COMMENTARY
As a retired Baltimore County special educator and based on my direct experience with referral, assessment, development and implementation of individual education plans for students and their parents or guardians who do not speak English, I was amazed at the incredible people who serve as translators (“Lost in translation: Disability advocates urge Maryland agencies to improve language access,” Dec. 6).
Not only did they interpret the language, they explained every aspect of the educational plan. Translators also explained back to the team all parental questions and concerns. If an interpreter was not available on the date of the scheduled team, the team was rescheduled.
My position was supported and enhanced by the wonderful committed interpreters. I relied on their expertise. These people are shining stars in the field of education.
