The network personality says the Pelicans standout is developing a reputation among New Orleans restaurants.
Zion Williamson has endured heavier criticism than usual following his poor showing in Thursday’s NBA in-season tournament semifinal. The fifth-year pro scored only 13 points while grabbing just two rebounds in the Pelicans’ 44-point loss to the Lakers.
That was hardly the performance expected from a No. 1 draft pick and burgeoning star. Consequently, fans and media ripped into Williamson after the game. TNT’s Charles Barkley and Shaquille O’Neal scrutinized his lack of rebounding production and failure to be a franchise player. Media covering the Pelicans reported that the forward disregards mandates to improve his diet and conditioning.
Among the loudest detractors has been ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith. On Friday, the pundit highlighted Williamson’s weight, saying he saw “a belly” on the Pelicans star. Smith doubled down on his remarks during Monday’s episode of First Take, claiming that Williamson’s appetite has become well known in New Orleans.
“It is shameful. I got chefs in New Orleans. I’m not exaggerating,” said Smith. “I’m not exaggerating, I’m quoting people. You got chefs in New Orleans who love him. They’re looking for him. Every chef there wants to meet him because they know he’ll show up to their restaurant. The word out on Zion Williamson is that he’ll eat the table.”
"I'm not exaggerating, I'm quoting people. You got chefs in New Orleans who love him. They're looking for him. Every chef there wants to meet him... The word out on Zion Williamson is that he'll eat the table."
Whether or not Smith was quoting actual New Orleans chefs, reporters covering the team, or figures in the Pelicans organization wasn’t clear. But the “eat the table” remark demonstrates how Williamson and his prodigious appetite are viewed.
Williamson, listed at 6’6” and 285 pounds, has missed significant time due to injury as a pro, including the entire 2021–22 season. He has appeared in 19 of the Pelicans’ 23 games so far this season.
The Pelicans (12–11) play host to the Timberwolves (17–4) at 8 p.m. ET Monday.
