Oriol Tarragó (‘Society of the Snow’ sound designer) on plane crashes, avalanches and the power of silence: ‘Everything was very intense’ [Exclusive Video Interview]
“We’re very excited,” says Oriol Tarragó, the sound designer, supervising sound editor and sfx re-recording mixer for director J.A. Bayona‘s “Society of the Snow.” The film is Spain’s entry for Best International Feature at the 96th Academy Awards and just earned a Golden Globe nomination for Best Non-English Film. “We’ve been working on it for a long time. It took us a while to get the money to produce it and we’re very grateful now.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.
“Society of the Snow” is the true story of a rugby team whose plane crashes in the Andes. The few passengers who survive the crash find themselves in one of the world’s toughest environments to survive. It will be available to stream on Netflix on January 4, 2024.
Tarragó attended film school with Bayona and the pair have been friends ever since. After working on a couple small projects, their partnership eventually flourished when they teamed up on “The Orphanage.” The sound designer says of the director, “He leaves a lot of room for sound in his filmmaking.”
“The whole movie was very challenging,” he says. They filmed in the Valley of Tears, sound stages, and a Spanish ski resort. “Everything was very intense. When the wind stops, the silence is so deep that the only thing you can hear is yourself. There’s a connection with your inner-self. We realized that could be a powerful tool to use dramatically in the film.” He also describes capturing the sounds for the initial plane crash, a horrific avalanche and everyday life in the mountains.
