A day after the adoption of the humanitarian ceasefire resolution in Gaza at the United Nations General Assembly, the Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Israel said on Wednesday that the military operation will continue even without international support.
Benjamin Netanyahu stated that the war would continue until the destruction of Hamas.
According to the Times of Israel, Netanyahu, during a visit to a detention centre in southern Israel, told a group of soldiers: ‘We will continue [the war] until the end, until victory, until the obliteration of Hamas. Nothing will stop us. Be assured of this.’
Eli Cohen, Israel’s Foreign Minister, also emphasized that the war against Hamas will continue ‘with or without international support.’ He told the Deputy Foreign Minister of Australia that the ceasefire in Gaza is ‘a gift’ to Hamas.
153 member countries of the United Nations voted in favour of the draft resolution for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza on Tuesday, but 10 countries, including the USA and Israel, opposed it, and 23 countries abstained.
Some countries, like Canada, which were previously against the ceasefire, voted in favour of the resolution at the assembly.
The U.S. President warned that Israel’s indiscriminate Gaza bombing risks losing international support and urged Netanyahu to reform his government, which resists a sovereign Palestinian state.
