Manchester United and Newcastle United’s eliminations from the Champions League reduce the chances that the Premier League will be awarded a fifth Champions League birth for next season, thus potentially affecting Tottenham’s chances of qualifying for the competition.
Ange Postecoglou’s men currently sit fifth in the table, with the race for the top-four spots looking likely to be fiercely contested this season.
There is some hope that a fifth-place finish would be enough to get into the Champions League as Europe’s Premier club competition is going to expand to a 36-team tournament.
Two of the four extra spots will go to the leagues which collectively perform best across UEFA’s three club competitions this term, which is calculated based on the club coefficient table (The Athletic).
A blow for the Premier League
Man Utd and Newcastle fell to defeats to Bayern Munich and AC Milan respectively this week, with both teams finishing at the bottom of their Champions League group.
That means that both the Red Devils and the Magpies have not even managed to get into the Europa League and are completely out of Europe.
This development reduces the chances that the Premier League would finish with one of the two highest co-efficient this season, but six English sides still remain in the three European competitions.
Spurs Web Opinion
I still fully expect the Premier League to get an extra Champions League spot. Despite Newcastle’s and Man Utd’s elimination, Man City and Arsenal are likely to go relatively deep into the competition.
Meanwhile, Brighton, Liverpool and West Ham have qualified for the knockout stages of the Europa League while Aston Villa are going strong in the Conference League.
