US officials have been visiting the West Bank to meet with Palestinian Authority leader Mahmoud Abbas to discuss reforms to combat corruption, empower civil society, and support a free press. Abbas, an architect of the 1993 Oslo peace accords with Israel, has seen his legitimacy undermined by Israeli settlement building in the occupied West Bank.
