A meal at a CT restaurant makes ‘national’ list of favorites. Here’s where you can find it.
We all know we love food. This said, the search is often on for the best meal we can find in Connecticut and many of us are known to peruse news for new restaurants, cafes and yes, fantastic food trucks.
Great restaurants open nearly every week, many are in the works and sadly, some of our favorites simply run their course for a variety of reasons, even that the chef or restaurateurs are are working on other projects.
All that said, there are sometimes specific meals that makes news, and they are right here in our Nutmeg state. That’s true of the “23 of the Best American Dishes of 2023” as reported by the New York Times.
The Times says its reporters and editors annually “travel the country to scout out candidates for our many best-restaurant lists.” (sounds like fun, right?)
This work is done as the NYT notes it creates a “big national listing in the early fall” and “best of” city lists. All in all, its reporters and editors “eat hundreds of meals in dozens of states,” to gather this extraordinary data, it reports. (does reading that make you feel cravings too?)
In this case, a Times staffer found a dish right here in Connecticut that made this “national” list. Or as the Times put it, it’s possible to “come across that one dish that we almost wish we’d ordered two of, and wish we could find closer to home.” So for this culinary delight, it is close to home for us in Connecticut.
The “winner”?
“Fried Chicken” at New Haven’s Tavern on State.
This eatery is in the tony East Rock section of the Elm City.
Writer Julia Moskin reports: “Its fried chicken thighs with green tomato relish and radish salad was the best of many dishes I loved this year in the growing ‘tavern’ category.”
That prompted us to share this post, in case fellow hungry state residents are in the mood for a new taste. And they have take out.
It’s worth noting that Tavern on State also was a finalist in the Connecticut Restaurant Association’s Crazies awards.
Among other Crazies 2023 winners are: Restaurant of the Year Award went to Coracora, Peruvian Restaurant of West Hartford; Chef of the Year went to David DiStasi from Materia Ristorante in Bantam; The Restaurant Newcomer presented by Brescome Barton went to 29 Markle Court, Bridgeport.
