Kevin McCarthy's 'sold his soul' and it will haunt him forever: Jen Psaki

0

With former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy stepping down from his seat in Congress representing his California district at the end of the year, former White House press secretary and current MSNBC host Jen Psaki claims he will be most remembered for "selling his soul" and not any legislative accomplishments.

In her column for MSNBC, Psaki wrote that McCarthy tried to satisfy every faction within his caucus while at the same time toeing the line with Donald Trump and that was unstainable.

More to the point, she noted, every move he made was about amassing power and that came back to bite him when his own caucus helped oust him — which will be his legacy.

"Why was he doing all of this? Well, because he was desperate to hold on to power. He wanted to be the leader of the Republican House, and eventually the speaker," she wrote before adding, "At the end of all of that, his soul-selling did get him the job. But it took an embarrassing 15 rounds of votes, and he was only able to hold on to it for 269 days."

"So, what is the McCarthy imprint on the speakership?" she asked. "Simply put, he made clear it can be bought and paid for, even by people who have played a role in attempting to overturn the very branch of government he is leading."
