Amnesty hails Neda Parwani’s release, calls for other women’s freedom

0

Amnesty International has welcomed the release of Neda Parwani, a human rights activist and protesting woman who was arrested and imprisoned three months ago and has called for the release of other protesting women who have been struggling with poor mental and physical conditions in the prisons of the Taliban administration for months.

This organization, in a message published on the social media platform X following the release of Neda Parwani, wrote that the arrest of Ms Parwani should not have happened at all and that her release was a positive event.

Sources confirmed to Khaama Press on Friday that Neda Parwani and her husband were released on bail from the custody of the Taliban on Thursday after three months of imprisonment.

Ms Parwani is one of the protesting women who took to the streets in protest against restrictions imposed by the caretaker government against women and girls in Afghanistan and participated in many street protests. She and her husband were arrested by the Taliban on 19 September due to their protest activities.

Several media outlets, citing their sources, have reported that Neda Parwani and her husband, Arash Parwani, were tortured in prison and are now in a poor mental and physical state. According to these reports, Ms Parwani was transferred to a health centre after being released from prison and is receiving medical care.

Human Rights Watch has criticized the global community’s silence towards human rights violations, particularly the violation of women’s rights by the Taliban, and expressed concern for protesting women who are in the prisons of the Taliban and are deprived of lawyers or visits from their family members.

Currently, Julia Parsi, Manizha Seddqi, and Parisa Azada are protesting women who have been detained for weeks with no news available about their condition in the prisons of the Taliban.

Heather Barr, the deputy head of the women’s section at Human Rights Watch, has also expressed concern about the situation of women in the prisons of the Taliban and has said that the number of imprisoned women and girls in Afghanistan is higher than what is usually reported in the media.
