Postecoglou confirms ‘planning is underway’ at Spurs for January transfers

0

Ange Postecoglou has acknowledged that he, Johan Lange and Daniel Levy have started drafting plans for next month’s transfer window.

January is set to be quite a busy month for Spurs, who kickstart their FA Cup campaign against Burnley at the start of the month.

Not only are the Lilywhites missing several key players due to injury, but they will also be without their captain Son Heung-min, who will link up with the South Korea squad for the Asian Cup, while Yves Bissouma and Pape Matar Sarr will also be unavailable during AFCON.

Postecoglou’s cause certainly was not helped by the fact that Bissouma picked up his second red card of the season in the 2-0 win over Nottingham Forest, which means that the Mali international is now suspended for four matches.

When asked if the January transfer window is coming at a good time for Spurs, the Australian told Sky Sports: “Yeah, if we get the outcomes it will be. But it’s going to be a challenging month for us because you’re talking about three players in Pape, Biss and Sonny who have been very important to what we’re trying to build.

“We’ve got Maddison, Van de Ven and Rodrigo Bentancur – really significant players who are missing – so fingers crossed the guys we’ve got at the moment stay healthy through that period.

“It’s going to be a challenging period and January is always a difficult transfer window to get things done particularly quickly, so I think we’re preparing ourselves for that.”

Postecoglou also revealed that he has been in contact with Levy and Lange over the club’s January plans.

Tottenham are already thinking about January deals

He added: “All of those things are in place. We don’t have daily meetings because that’s their department. Johan’s [Lange] got his department and he talks with Daniel [Levy] and all of the other key personnel, and I’ll get in the loop when you get the significant moments of potentially some progress in certain areas.

“But yeah, the planning is underway but obviously you need multiple parties to be involved and agree on something, and that’s not always easy.”

The Tottenham head coach admitted last week that the club need reinforcements at centre-back as they are short of numbers in that position (Football.London), and that is something he has now reiterated.

The 58-year-old said about the club’s centre-back situation: “When you think about it, we let Davinson Sanchez go after the window closed. We kind of knew we were taking a bit of a risk. We couldn’t get the extra centre-back that we were trying to get in, and for the early part of the year that was fine.

“But once we lost Micky [van de Ven], and Eric Dier’s had some issues as well, we don’t have another centre-back. Young Ash Phillips had just joined the club, so it’s fair to say that we can’t run the risk of that happening again, so that’s obviously a priority for us in January.

“But again, we’ve got to get the right person. It’s not just about bringing another body in, it’s about getting the right one in and hopefully that’ll happen.”

Tottenham cannot afford to wait until the end of the window for bargain deals like they usually do. It is imperative that the club get a couple of bodies through the door in the first week or two of January as we are a couple more injuries and suspensions away from having to turn to academy players.
