Sir Tony Blair rules out doing a David Cameron and accepting a peerage to get a Cabinet job
SIR TONY Blair has ruled out ‘doing a David Cameron’ and returning to frontline politics with a peerage.
The ex-PM said he would “not consider” taking a seat in the House of Lords in order to join Sir Keir Starmer’s cabinet if Labour win the next election.
Rishi Sunak handed the former Tory PM a seat in the House of Lords so he could be Foreign Secretary in his recent Cabinet reshuffle.
And some Westminster insiders reckoned Sir Keir could do the same with Sir Tony if he wins the next election.
A source said: “Rishi bringing back Cameron has shown there is a path to Blair coming back as Foreign Secretary.
“I wouldn’t bet against it.”
But Team Blair slapped down the chatter.
Sir Tony’s spokeswoman said: “It’s not something he would consider.
“He is happy doing work with his Institute, which takes up the vast majority of his time, and informs the debate on the right policy solutions for the country.”
Sir Keir’s office is stuffed full of old Blairites.
Labour MP Pat McFadden – Sir Tony’s old political secretary – is now Sir Keir’s election chief.
His wife Marianna used to work for Tony Blair’s Institute but was poached by Labour HQ last year.
And many other aides from the Blair years have made a comeback under Sir Keir.
