Last week’s resignation of Dr. Gail Beck as chair of the Ottawa Police Services Board, following the arrest of her 37-year-old son, Timon Beck, during a major drug bust, is a loss, both for the board and the city. With growing scrutiny on police involvement in incidents where mental-health issues are at play, Dr. Beck’s long history of community service and her advocacy for women’s and children’s mental health made her a welcome addition to the board when she was tapped for the position last April.
