Five tips for putting together the ideal Christmas cheese board on a budget

FOR some people, it’s not Christmas without cheese.

But it can be a daunting prospect putting together a platter to serve if you’re a novice.

Fear not, here is how to create a delicious cheese course without spending too much . . .

THE BIG THREE: Cheddar, stilton and brie are the typical Christmas mainstays on a cheeseboard.

But you don’t have to stick to these types and can save cash by using cheaper alternatives.

For example, Red Leicester is not too dissimilar to cheddar.

Deb Rowley, a trained cheesemonger at Morrisons deli counter in Huddersfield, says: “It tends to be much lower priced than other cheeses.”

SIZE UP: Make use of the cheese counters in your local supermarket or find a specialist shop.

Buy portions cut to size to avoid buying more than you need.

Cheesemongers can also help advise on the best-value varieties — and you’re more likely to find special offers on unusual ones.

DON’T GO OVERBOARD: You can easily buy much more cheese than you need.

But Deb says: “Around £10 is a healthy budget for a cheeseboard and allows for a variety in strength and texture.”

If you want to add some interest, she recommends looking for flavours such as garlic or a cheddar with chilli and lime.

PERFECT ACCOMPANIMENT: If you add chutney remember that different varieties suit different flavours.

Deb says: “Sweet onion marmalade goes well with blue cheese.

“A strong chutney, while great with cheddar, wouldn’t go with a delicate brie.”

As well as crackers, celery is a good accompaniment to a board and relatively cheap.

GOOD TIMING: Take cheese out of the fridge ahead of serving so it’s room temperature when brought out.

And clear away leftovers as soon as possible.

Deb adds: “Cheeses are like sponges — they absorb flavours in the air so try to store them in sealed containers.”
