Oscars shortlists: ‘Killers of the Flower Moon,’ ‘Society of the Snow’ lead
The Oscars shortlists unveiled on December 21 provide invaluable insight into the state of the 96th Academy Awards, the nominations for which will be announced on January 23. Of the hundreds of feature films that were initially submitted across seven categories – Best Documentary Feature, Best International Feature, Best Makeup and Hairstyling, Best Original Score, Best Original Song, Best Sound, and Best Visual Effects – only 62 made the cut, and just 17 found their way onto multiple lists each.
Out in front with four appearances apiece are “Killers of the Flower Moon” and “Society of the Snow.” “American Symphony,” “Barbie,” “Napoleon,” “Oppenheimer,” “Poor Things,” “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” and “The Zone of Interest” each landed on three lists, while the eight films that ended up on two are “The Color Purple,” “The Creator,” “Ferrari,” “Four Daughters,” “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny,” “Maestro,” “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One,” and “20 Days in Mariupol.” Scroll through our photo gallery to find out the categories in which they are contending.
Also one step closer to official Oscar bids are 45 short films across three categories: Best Animated Short, Best Documentary Short, and Best Live Action Short. The semi-finalists on each of those shortlists will be winnowed down to five final contenders during the nominations voting period (January 11-16).
