Almost all the male residents of Sathram, aged in the 18-40 age group, procure a clearance certificate from the police and carry pilgrims on ‘dollys’ climbing the 5-km steep incline from Pampa to Sannidhanam in 45 minutes. They at times earn ₹2 lakh a year. However, the work takes a toll on their knees and they switch to other jobs after the age of 40.
