“CONTINUOUS DRIVERS’ EDUCATION, A MUST” – LASDRI

The spate of accidents on our roads in the last quarter of every year has no doubt made continuous enlightenment and education of all categories of road users towards ensuring safety on our roads, a compelling exercise.

The General Manager, Lagos State Drivers’ Institute (LASDRI), Mrs. Afusat Tiamiyu stated this during the continuation of this year’s Ember Months Public Enlightenment and Sensitization Campaign held in conjunction with the Coalition of Driving Schools in Lagos State at the Toll Gate, Ojota.

According to Mrs. Tiamiyu, the last quarter of every year which has become known as “EMBER” months in the transportation and traffic management circle has been associated with a high rate of preventable accidents largely traced to human error and mechanical fault from careless neglect of necessary maintenance of vehicles.

She further explained that the safety advocacy campaign has been staged simultaneously at various identified locations of the state and focuses on several issues which include continuous safety, obedience to traffic rules and regulations, maintenance of vehicles, observation of right of ways, observation of signal light, and consideration for other road users.

In the same vein, the Public Education Officer of the Federal Roads Safety Corps (FRSC), Lagos Sector Command, Olabisi Sonusi said safety awareness is key and necessary, adding that many of the commuter public are not patient enough while their desire to make more profits during yuletide seasons also accounts for roads crashes.

She said the road safety awareness programme will help to remind motorists of the necessary things they need to consider while driving this yuletide season.

In his own words, the Public Relations Officer of the Coalition of Driving Schools in Lagos State, Mr. Bolaji Goriola said the coming together of traffic management stakeholders for ember month’s safety campaign would send a strong signal and instil discipline in motorists.

The group led by the General Manager, Lagos State Drivers’ Institute, Mrs. Afusat Tiamiyu displayed banners and placards with safety tips and messages of caution while wishing the road users a safe journey.

The campaign brought together safety professionals and traffic management agencies who advocated safety and reminded the motoring public of the need to embrace safety during the yuletide season and beyond.
