Emmy nominee profile: Judith Light is a vengeful radical on ‘Poker Face’

0

For the fifth time in her career, Judith Light has scored a Primetime Emmy nomination, this one in Best Comedy Guest Actress for playing Irene Smothers in “Time of the Monkey” in the first season of the Peacock series “Poker Face.”

In the episode, Irene shares a living unit in a retirement community with her longtime friend, Joyce (S. Epatha Merkerson), with whom she grows marijuana in their room and listens to music in the common room at a very loud volume. Charlie (Natasha Lyonne), working as a janitor at the facility, instantly becomes friends with the two ladies and they tell her about how they were both radicals who got locked up in the 1970s after a raid on their hideout that left Irene paralyzed and killed their mentor, Gabriel.

One day, Irene and Joyce recognize a new tenant moving in and it’s Gabriel. The two are ecstatic that he’s still alive until he confesses that he ratted the group out to the feds. Despite saying they forgive him, Irene and Joyce vow to kill him. Irene fakes having to use the bathroom, and while in there, she hops out of her wheelchair, climbs up the side of the building to Gabriel’s room and murders him without being noticed. When Charlie learns that the two were arrested for planning to blow up a gathering of high school students, she puts it together that Irene and Joyce murdered Gabriel. The pair get into a heated fight with Charlie (full of fisticuffs, knitting needles and tasers) before the staff and the cops enter and arrest the two.

Despite being on television for years, Light didn’t earn her first Primetime Emmy nomination until 2007 in this category for “Ugly Betty.” She then scored back-to-back bids for “Transparent” in Best Comedy Supporting Actress (2016-17). Her last nomination was in 2018 for her supporting turn on the limited series “The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story.” She has won two Daytime Emmys for Best Actress in a Daytime Drama in 1980 and 1981 for “One Life to Live.”

There’s a lot that Light has going in her favor. She’s an acting legend who is insanely overdue for recognition from the TV academy. She’s almost unrecognizable as Irene and manages to make you both love her and fear her. The chemistry between her and Merkerson is amazing as well. All of this makes for a strong case that she could finally win her first Primetime Emmy.
