Media outlets, citing officials from Indonesia, have reported that a nickel factory explosion in Indonesia resulted in 13 deaths and 38 injuries.
CNN has reported that around 5:30 am today, an explosion at a nickel processing factory in eastern Indonesia left 13 dead and 38 injured.
According to reports, this incident occurred at the Tsingshan Steel Company in the Morowali Industrial Park in Sulawesi city.
Dedi Kurniawan, spokesperson for Morowali Industrial Park, also confirmed this incident and added that the injured have been transferred to the hospital.
He further stated that among the deceased, there are 7 Indonesians and 5 foreigners, but their nationalities have not yet been determined.
Officials have added that this nickel production factory in Indonesia is financed by Chinese investment in a government industrial town in the country.
Preliminary investigations indicate that during the repair of the furnace, a flammable liquid ignited the explosion and an adjacent oxygen tanker exploded.
This is significant as Indonesia is a hub for the production and processing of nickel metal, which is used in the manufacture of batteries for electric vehicles and stainless steel.
