Turkey strikes PPK targets in Iraq, Syria after 12 soldiers killed
The Turkish air force launched airstrikes in northern Iraq and Syria, targeting 29 positions of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) following the death of 12 Turkish soldiers over two days in northern Iraq.
Conducted at 10 p.m. (1900 GMT), the strikes hit bases, shelters, and oil facilities associated with PKK militants, aiming to dismantle their operational capabilities.
The specific regions in northern Iraq and Syria targeted by the airstrikes were not disclosed in the defense ministry’s report, as reported by Reuters.
Before the airstrikes, the Turkish defense ministry reported the loss of 12 soldiers in clashes with PKK militants in northern Iraq over the past two days.
On the day of the airstrikes, the military engaged in operations against PKK, “neutralizing” at least 16 militants, with ongoing clashes indicating the intensity of the conflict.
The term “neutralized” is typically used by Turkey to denote the killing of militants, with the ministry also confirming the death of seven militants the day before.
The PKK, which initiated an armed struggle against the Turkish state in 1984, is designated as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the United States, and the European Union. Turkey continues its air strikes in neighboring Iraq targeting PKK bases.
