My boyfriend got me a Christmas present instead of paying this month’s half of the rent – I’m livid, he should return it
A WOMAN was left fuming after her boyfriend bought her a £400 watch for Christmas instead of paying his half of the rent.
The couple, who live in a two bedroom flat together, are now locking horns over whether he should return the watch – as he insists his girlfriend is being “ungrateful”.
What’s more, he even paid £100 short of the rent last month, meaning she had to cover him.
The woman has been told to “get rid of that useless loser” after sharing her story on Mumsnet.
“I have recently bought a flat with the intention of renting out my spare room to cover the costs,” she penned.
“My boyfriend suggested that he move in instead and pay £400 towards bills and food each month; the rental income would have been around £1100 had I got a lodger.
“He gave me £300 last month, £100 short, but I let it slide.
“He just presented me with a £400 watch for Christmas, which would be very generous, but it turns out that this gift is instead of his monthly payment.”
The girlfriend, and owner of the flat, rushed out to buy her boyfriend clothes for Christmas and took him out for a meal to share her gratitude for the watch.
But then she realised he had gifted it in place of his rent.
“I’d like him to return the watch so that I can have the cash instead but he says I’m being ungrateful and ruining his nice gesture,” she said.
The girlfriend has been urged to kick her “useless” boyfriend out after Christmas and get a lodger in.
People warned her that “this is just the start of him financially taking the p**s”.
“A relationship is as good at the beginning as it’s ever going to be, it’s downhill from here,” one said.
“He’s a parasite who sees you as a meal ticket.
“Soon, he will stop contributing anything to the household.”
Others theorised that he likely didn’t pay the full £400 for the watch and actually got it in the Black Friday sales.
“How do you even know if he paid full price for the watch? I bet he didn’t,” one person said.
“He’s probably just given you a £400 item that didn’t even cost £400.
“If he’s like this so early on, what’s he going to be like in a few months time?”
“I’d throw him out instantly,” another penned.
“He knows exactly what he’s doing here and no, that watch didn’t cost him £400.”
