Glen Powell admits promoting 'Anyone but You' with Sydney Sweeney wasn't easy because he was going through a 'very real breakup'
- Glen Powell told BI why the romance rumors with costar Sydney Sweeney were so tough on him.
- "I was going through a very real breakup amidst a promotional tour," the "Anyone but You" star said.
- Powell broke up with model Gigi Paris in April.
Looks can be deceiving, which is certainly the case when it comes to two costars promoting a romantic comedy.
In the months leading up to the release of "Anyone but You," costars Glen Powell and Sydney Sweeney were the topic of relationship rumors online. The chatter kickstarted in April when the attractive pair attended Las Vegas' CinemaCon to present footage of their movie and looked so flirty that the internet was convinced they were an item.
The attention certainly amplified the anticipation for the movie.
But Powell admitted to Business Insider that, despite the "authentic chemistry" he has with Sweeney, they were playing up those flirty looks to promote their rom-com.
"I'll pretty much give Sydney all the credit for this," Powell told BI. "I don't have the mental capacity to pull anything like this off, but she's very smart. She's very smart. I had such a wonderful journey with her on this thing."
"But in terms of actual dating and actually being together?" Powell continued, answering his own question with laughter.
In fact, behind the scenes, it wasn't the best of times for Powell.
"The only reason it made things harder for me to lean into that stuff was that I was going through a very real breakup amidst a promotional tour," Powell said.
Soon after the trip to CinemaCon, news hit that Powell had broken up with his girlfriend, model Gigi Paris.
"I was with someone that I really loved and cared about and was trying to kind of make sense of a lot of stuff," he said.
"It was a lot easier for Sydney to lean into something like that because she's in a very committed and wonderful relationship and she's very happy," Powell continued, referring to Sweeney's relationship with fiancé Jonathan Davino. "So it was a little harder for me."
Despite "Anyone but You" only taking in $8 million at the box office over the holiday weekend, the movie received an impressive 85% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. A big reason for that rating is likely due to the undeniable on-screen chemistry between Powell and Sweeney.
The costars are certainly aware of their combined star power. Powell said they are not opposed to teaming up again for another rom-com.
"Sydney and I have talked about that," he said. "I find that Sydney is one of the few people I have worked with who is so impressive in front of the camera and behind the camera. What she does on-screen is electric. I would work with her again in a heartbeat."
"Anyone but You" is currently playing in theaters.
