Ex-Mitt Romney adviser is a thorn in the side of old-guard Republicans: report
Mitt Romney’s former domestic policy adviser has become "one of the biggest thorns in the side of the Republican old guard," according to the Deseret News' Brigham Tomco.
In an interview with the Deseret News, Oren Cass told Tornco that the problem with Donald Trump has always been that he's "not necessarily a very effective builder."
“He was very good at knocking things down. But I don’t think he brought a coherent vision for where to go forward. And so that is the work that is now being done," Cass said.
Cass's organization American Compass, which he founded in 2019, is now characterized as one of the most effective inside D.C. with serious political clout. Now, Republicans will have to deal his penchant for coming up against the status quo.

Republicans senators such as Tom Cotton and J.D. Vance have partnered with American Compass on initiatives such as blue-collar vocational training and to increase manufacturing in the U.S. According to Cotton, a working-class agenda is needed to transform the Republican Party’s “incipient majority into an actual and durable majority.”
Cass says his organization's partnering with high-profile Republicans shows that the tide is changing in his favor, and his old boss Mitt Romney is at the helm.
“When I think about what were the quintessential Trump issues, those were Romney issues first,” Cass said. “On the China issue, he was the person on the right of center who was out in front on this stuff first. … And the same goes for immigration.”
