‘Quick and silky’ – How Djed Spence is doing at full-back for Leeds United
Djed Spence delivered a good performance as Leeds overcame Ipswich Town on Saturday but the full-back struggled in the club’s Boxing Day loss at Preston North End.
As we reported last week, Spence has been playing at left-back for Daniel Farke’s men since his return from injury and the 23-year-old has done quite well despite being played out of position and his lack of game time this season.
He and the rest of his Leeds teammates delivered what was arguably their best performance of the season so far last Saturday, thrashing high-flying Ipswich Town 4-0 at Elland Road.
The result meant that Spence, Joe Rodon and co ensured that they remained in touching distance of the automatic promotion spots, just when it seemed like Leicester City and Ipswich were running away with it.

Leeds Live showered praise on the former Middlesbrough defender, insisting that his showing against the Tractor Boys was his best of the season so far.
They gave Spence a rating of 8 out of 10 and wrote: “By far his most complete display for the Whites so far. Really dependable in the backline, especially when he was exposed by Struijk’s wanderings. Looked even better in attack, though. So quick and silky on the run. Defenders can’t get the ball off him.”
However, Spence and his teammates were brought crashing back down to earth on Tuesday as Preston consigned them to a 2-1 loss, with Spence coming in for criticism for his showing at the Deepdale Stadium.
Leeds Live gave the on-loan Tottenham man 5 out of 10 for his Boxing Day display and wrote: “Some decent forays forward in the first half, but has to do better with Alan Browne beating him to the ball for the goal.”

We already know how good Spence can be for a club at the top end of the Championship. The jury is still out on whether he is good enough for the Premier League level but I do expect several top-flight teams to vie for the 23-year-old’s signature next summer.
