United Nations sends asylum seekers to Rwanda despite opposing UK plans

THE UNITED Nations has sent scores of asylum seekers to Rwanda – despite opposing the UK plan to help stop small boat Channel crossings.

Home Secretary James Cleverly said the UN scheme allowing for 153 people evacuating from Libya this week highlighted the country’s hospitality.

Ministers have been blocked from deporting migrants to the African country after the Supreme Court ruled the policy illegal.

It said asylum seekers could be returned to their home country where they could face harm.

But Mr Cleverly said: “Another clear example of Rwanda’s hospitality, capability and commitment to hosting refugees.”

Insiders last night pointed to the UN using the country for third party asylum processing despite having doubts about their system for the UK plan.

A source said: “Rwanda is not only safe for this process it is eager, willing and fully capable of being part of the solution to this global problem.

“The UNHCR’s actions show they actually believe that too.”

Right-wing Tory MPs are still concerned new legislation isn’t strong enough as it will allow individual legal challenges to continue.

But Rishi Sunak has insisted Rwanda would pull out of any deal if Britain breached its international obligations.
