What to watch this weekend December 29, 2023: TV awards contenders
The third season of “Slow Horses,” easily TV’s best spy thriller and one of the best shows of the year, comes to a close this week in the game-changing finale “Footprints.” In the 45-minute episode, which is now streaming on Apple TV+, the various members of Slough House find themselves with their backs up against a wall only to defy all possible expectations once more.
As Lamb (Golden Globe nominee Gary Oldman) and Ho (Christopher Chung) attempt to rescue Standish (Saskia Reeves) and evade capture, River (Jack Lowden), Louisa (Rosalind Eleazar), Marcus (Kadiff Kirwan) and Shirley (Aimee-Ffion Edwards) must fight off the Dogs sicced on them by Tearney (Sophie Okonedo) in order to cover her ass and keep MI-5’s dirty little secrets under lock and key. With plenty of high-stakes drama, memorable performances from Oldman and Lowden, and an impeccable mix of character, action and humor, “Slow Horses” is the awards contender to watch this weekend.

But while pickings might be rather slim for the final days of the year, others contenders include:
- “46th Annual Kennedy Center Honors”: Every year, the Kennedy Center celebrates some of America’s best for their lasting contributions to the performing arts in a dazzling TV special jam-packed with more talent than “Love Actually.” This year’s special honors the lifetime achievements of Billy Crystal, Queen Latifah, Barry Gibb, Dionne Warwick and Renée Fleming. It is now streaming on Paramount+.
- “Reacher”: If “Slow Horses” didn’t sate your appetite for action and well-placed humor, set your sights on the latest episode of this Amazon Prime Video series, which is proving to be one of the streamer’s best and strongest shows to date. This season finds Reacher (Alan Ritchson) reuniting with members of his old MP unit to find out why several of their friends and former colleagues have been targeted and murdered. In “Burial,” Reacher and O’Donnell (Shaun Sipos) pay a visit to Homeland Security to get answers about the mysterious man they’re up against, while Neagley (Maria Stern) and Dixon (Serinda Swan) travel to Denver to intercept a shipment of missiles before they can be loaded with dangerous technology. The episode is now streaming.
- “Doctor Who”: If you’re someone who is not quite ready to put the holiday season to bed but also somehow missed the delightful new “Doctor Who” Christmas special, move it to the top of your viewing list this weekend. After being introduced in the 60th anniversary specials a few weeks ago, Ncuti Gatwa officially takes control of the TARDIS in “The Church on Ruby Road,” and viewers get to meet Fifteen’s companion, Ruby Sunday, portrayed by Millie Gibson. The episode is streaming on Disney+.
