KATE Garraway’s family is “trying to stay strong” after spending Christmas by her husband’s bedside.
The Good Morning Britain star, 56, has stayed by Derek Draper’s side since he suffered a heart attack three weeks ago – the latest setback after he contracted Covid in 2020.
We revealed last week how Kate was spending Christmas in hospital by gravely ill Derek’s bedside following his latest setback.
A source said: “It’s been a heartbreaking time for Kate and, of course, poor Derek.
“Sadly, his condition remains much the same.
“The children are aware of the situation and have been by their dad’s bedside as much as possible.
“The whole family is rallying around and trying to stay strong for one another.
“At Christmas time, this is especially devastating.”
Kate has taken indefinite leave of absence from ITV’s Good Morning Britain and Smooth Radio due to 56-year-old Derek’s worsening condition.
He was first admitted to hospital with Covid in March 2020.
He fell into a coma and was put on a ventilator.
The former lobbyist spent 13 months in hospital — making him Britain’s longest-suffering coronavirus victim.
Derek has since battled various health problems, with the virus causing him brain inflammation, kidney failure and liver and pancreas damage.
He still has difficulty breathing unaided.
Kate has adapted their North London home for her husband, who spends much of his time on hospital trips and sleeping.
He has been the subject of two acclaimed ITV documentaries fronted by Kate.
Kate’s family has been inundated with support since.
Reaching out across social media on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook, fans have been writing encouraging words for Kate to read as she remains with Derek in hospital.
One said: “My mother and I send our best wishes to you and your family, our thoughts are with you in the awful time you are going through .We hope you have the best possible Christmas and new year.”
Another added: “Big hugs to Kate Garraway and her family . . . enough said.”
Someone else said: “So sorry to hear about Kate Garraway’s husband, Derek Draper condition deteriorating. This family have been through so much. It’s near Christmas and it’s just not fair. Thinking of them and others facing serious illness at this time of year.”
