UN Security Council resolution outlines path for international cooperation on Afghanistan: EX-UK envoy
The former British ambassador to Afghanistan says the United Nations Security Council resolution defines the path for cooperation among the international community on Afghanistan’s issue.
Nicholas Kay said Afghan political forces should cooperate with the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy in inter-Afghan talks by setting aside their differences.
Meanwhile, he emphasized that the UN Secretary-General must consider all aspects of the case, including diplomatic skills and familiarity with Afghanistan when choosing his special representative for the country.
He believes that to reach inter-Afghan talks, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy must make considerable efforts towards a global consensus, including uniting forces against the Taliban as well as the Taliban themselves.
The former British ambassador to Afghanistan called the global community’s support vital for the success of the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for peace in Afghanistan and said that instead of debating divisive issues, Afghan political groups should focus on vital topics such as drafting a constitution and the nature of the regime.
On Friday, the United Nations Security Council adopted a resolution on Afghanistan and asked the UN Secretary-General to appoint a special envoy for the country.
Meanwhile, the Taliban officials announced their disagreement with the appointment of a new UN envoy for Afghanistan.
