And On A Personal Note, Some Sad News
A great loss to his many loved ones
As some of you know, my family history is very intertwined with Duke’s. My grandfather came there when the medical school first opened and worked here his entire professional life. Of his children, four went to Duke and one, my mother, worked there for most of her professional life (when she wasn't in Cameron, that is).
Several of my cousins also either attended Duke undergrad or grad and many of you will know various of my cousins, the Warners.
Their dad also went to med school at Duke - go figure.
Among them was my cousin Dr. Deryl Warner, who was named for our grandfather, Dr. Deryl Hart. I am sure that some of our readers know him from his eight years at Duke.
For any of his friends who don’t know, I’m very sorry to tell you that he passed away last week from pancreatic cancer. He fought it bravely and with good humor for a year before succumbing. He was a good man and a wonderful cousin and I will miss him deeply.
Things will be a bit slow this weekend as his service is Saturday morning in Georgia. We thought we’d link his obituary here and for any of his friends who can’t attend, it will be streaming from the church. Just check the link.
Also, I wanted to again thank the people from Duke Oncology who were kind enough to answer our post when we were seeking advice on Deryl’s treatment. You were all very kind and deeply thoughtful. If I missed any of you individually, please know how very much he appreciated your concern and advice.
We will have a write up of the Queens game though so be sure to check in for that.
