Journalist says Dutchman ‘very seriously’ considered joining Tottenham
Journalist Sjoerd Mossou has stated that Arne Slot seriously considered becoming Tottenham’s head coach last summer and suggested that the Feyenoord boss might be regretting his decision to stay at Rotterdam.
Slot’s stock was very high last summer after he led Feyenoord to a historic Eredivisie title triumph last season and Tottenham came knocking on his door.
At one point, it seemed as if the 45-year-old was nailed on to become the next Tottenham head coach, with reports indicating that Feyenoord were resigned to losing their boss to the Premier League side (Football Insider).
However, the move never materialised, with some publications suggesting that it fell through as a result of the Lilywhites refusing to pay the £20m compensation that the Dutch club wanted (talkSPORT).
Ange Postecoglou turned out to be the right choice
Spurs then decided to appoint Ange Postecoglou and the decision has been vindicated, with the Australian transforming the team’s style of play and quickly becoming a fan favourite.
It remains to be seen if Slot will get offered such a big job anytime soon as Feyenoord look unlikely to repeat the heroics of last season, with PSV Eindhoven having a 10-point lead at the top of Eredivisie standings.
Mossou believes that the Dutch coach stayed since he believed that the De Kuip hierarchy would back him with big signings, which has not materialised.
The journalist told FC Update (as translated by Sport Witness) about Slot: “He made it seem like it was never a consideration, but he did consider it very seriously. It was especially smart communication from Slot.
“He had the hope, if he stayed at Feyenoord for an extra year, that they could bring in players from a higher level, instead of a lower level.
“Not much has changed yet. Luka Ivanusec is a Croatian international, you can call him from the upper category. But Feyenoord also brings in players who play at a lower level.”
Spurs Web Opinion
It was clear in the summer that Slot was taking a huge gamble by turning down the Tottenham job as his stock was as high as it was ever going to be. Spurs fans will be delighted at the Dutchman’s decision as the North London club have struck gold with Postecoglou.
