‘A leader’ – Paul Merson names Spurs defender in his Team of the Season
Paul Merson has praised Cristian Romero’s leadership qualities and named the Tottenham centre-back in his Premier League Team of the Season so far.
Like a lot of the Tottenham squad, Romero had a campaign to forget last term, being part of an extremely leaky Spurs backline.
However, the Argentine has stepped up in a big way this season and is finally playing with the sort of consistency that one would expect of a player of his talent.
The 25-year-old has impressively marshalled a young Tottenham defence and seems to have grown with the responsibility after being made vice-captain by Ange Postecoglou.
Spurs will now have to cope without the former Juventus star for around a month, with Postecoglou confirming in his press conference on Wednesday that the centre-back’s hamstring problem was worse than initially feared (Football.London).
Is Romero one of the best defenders in the league?
Merson believes that despite his tendency to make rash challenges, Romero has been one of the best centre-backs in the Premier League this season, and admitted that he would have also named Micky van de Ven in his Team of the Season if the Dutchman had played more games.
The former Arsenal midfielder told Soccer Special on Sky Sports (26/12/23 at 2:35 pm): “I would have gone with him (Micky van de Ven in my Team of the Season), but I don’t think he has played a lot of football.
“If he was fit, then he would have been in mine. But I have gone for Romero and Saliba, who has been absolutely amazing. I think the Tottenham centre-back. I think he is outstanding as well.
“He is a leader. I know he is a bit rash sometimes. But I would rather not be marked against him if I am being honest. He is one of them players, if I was a centre-forward, I would think ‘Nah, I wouldn’t want to play against him’.”
Spurs Web Opinion
Romero’s absence for four to five weeks be a huge blow to Spurs, not only because of his quality but also precisely because he is one of our most vocal leaders on the pitch.
It will be interesting to see if Postecoglou decides to turn to the experience of Eric Dier or if he once again opts to start Emerson Royal at centre-back against Brighton.
