Bay lose out in New Year’s Eve derby
THE Seagulls lost their New Year’s Eve ‘derby’ 2-1 at Caernarfon Town to remain entrenched in a relegation battle in the bottom three of the JD Cymru Premier League.
After goalless first half, played in wind and teamiung rain, the Bay went 0-2 down in the space of 10 second half minutes, and although Tom McCready pulled a goal back with a 25 yard free kick, they couldn’t force an equaliser.
It was a disappointing result with other sides in the bottom four all picking up a point over the weekend.
Joe Smith made a good save to prevent Dan Gosset giving Caernarfon the lead before half-time, with Bay rarely threatening, but in the second half it took a tremendous save by home keeper 16-year-old HariThomas to tip a 30 yard block-buster from Tom McCready over the bar.
Cai Owen headed a difficult chance wide and at the other end Joe Smith made an excellent one-handed save from Zack Clarke and tipped another effort from Clarke over the bar before former Seagull Marc Williams broke through to give Caernarfon the lead on 62 minutes.
Bay had their chances but Udi Akpan’s heavy touch allowed the keeper to save at his feet an Thomas also made a good save from Dan Jones.
Alex Downes was then very unlucky when his header from Tom McCready’s corner hit the underside of the bar and stayed out and almost immediately Caernarfon broke upfield for Zack Clarke to double their lead with an angled shot that was deflected past Joe Smith off Sam Hart’s outstretched leg.
Tom McCready’s excellent free kick on 81 minutes gave the Seagulls some hope, but from their best opening the skipper put too much weight on his pass in attempt to put Lloyd Marsh-Hughes clear on goal and the keeper raced out out to gather.
In the closing stages it needed a good block by Sam Hart and another fine save by Joe Smith to prevent Caernarfon increasing their lead.
