Calif. lawmakers seek ‘nonbinary’ gender option on driver’s licenses
SACRAMENTO — California would create a third gender option on driver’s licenses and birth certificates — one for “nonbinary” people who do not identify as either male or female, under a bill introduced Thursday. The bill would remove a requirement under state law that a physician provide a sworn statement attesting to a gender change in order to have that reflected on identifying documents. [...] a person making the request would have to attest, under penalty of perjury, that they seek to make the change so that their license or birth certificate conforms to their gender identity and not for fraudulent purposes. Wiener said the bill shows California will continue to move forward to create a welcome environment for all people, which he said stands in contrast to other states pushing for restrictions on what bathrooms transgender people can use. There are a lot of transgender people across the country living in absolute fear as states try to strip them of their rights. Kris Hayashi, executive director of the Transgender Law Center, said the bill would help reduce the barriers and harassment transgender people experience when showing their ID to vote, apply for a bank account or go through airport security.
