It’s official.

The Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE) will no longer be held this year after President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. signed the measure postponing it to next year.

Based on Republic Act (RA) No. 11935, the BSKE will now take place on the last Monday of October 2023 “and every three years thereafter.”

The term of office of the newly elected officials will start at noon on November 30 following their election.

The BSKE were supposed to take place in December this year.

Based on the law, all incumbent barangay and SK officials shall remain in office until their successors are elected and qualified or unless they are sooner removed or suspended.

Barangay and SK officials, who are ex officio members of the Sangguniang Bayan, Sangguniang Panlungsod, or Sangguniang Panlalawigan shall continue to serve as such members until the next BSKE, unless removed under existing rules.

It was the second law that Marcos signed since he assumed office in June. The first one was the SIM Registration Act. He signed both measures on October 10.
