Ron Dellums passed away on July 29, 2018. He was a lifelong activist and served as an open democratic socialist first in the U.S. House representing California and later as the mayor of Oakland. In the debut issue of In These Times in November 1976, John Judis interviewed Dellums and wrote about the growing left movement in the East Bay. Here we present that interview in full.

FRANKFURT, GERMANY—In a sprawling conference center in the financial heart of continental Europe, 11 sharply dressed speakers squeeze onto a tiny stage.
