It appeared that the first successful Iranian attack on an American asset since tensions escalated in the Gulf would not be the trigger that tipped Iran and the US into direct conflict. Yet by Friday morning, US media were reporting that the president had approved military strikes against Iranian targets, including radar and missile batteries. War planes were in the air and ships were in position. But before a shot was fired, the operation was abruptly called off.
