The Grand Prize at the Geneva International Exhibition of Inventions was awarded on Friday to Omani biologist Sumaiya Al Siyabi for a process that breaks down microplastics present in aquatic ecosystems. The Swiss-Brazilian artist Guerreiro do Divino Amor represents Switzerland for the 60th edition of the Venice Art Biennale, which opens on Saturday. Economics Minister Guy Parmelin has signed a partnership agreement that will see Switzerland contribute around CHF10 million ($11 million) to the Global Partnership in Public Finance (GPFP) initiative of the International Monetary Fund. Thousands of activists took to the streets in five Swiss cities on Friday to protest against fossil fuel infrastructure and climate-damaging investments. The demonstrations were part of the "global climate strike". Despite the rain, an estimated 5,000 people took part in the authorised demonstrations for climate justice in Zurich, Bern, Lucerne, Aarau and Sion, the Climate Strike movement announced on Friday evening.
