The Verge

Apple plans to announce updated iPad Pros with USB-C ports, a 13-inch laptop meant to replace the MacBook Air, and long-awaited updates to the Mac Mini during its event Tuesday morning, according to Bloomberg. Just about all of this has been rumored before, but Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman is usually the definitive name when it comes to nailing exactly what we’ll see on event day, and with a few days to go, we now have those answers.

Lucasfilm canceling its Boba Fett film could be good news for Star Wars’ future

The Verge

Lucasfilm’s standalone Boba Fett movie has apparently been Sarlacced. Rumors of the film’s development broke right as Solo: A Star Wars Story was hitting theaters, but last night, a reporter for Sirius XM radio said Lucasfilm chief Kathleen Kennedy told him the film was “100% dead,” and that they’re “100% focusing on The Mandalorian,” a new show destined for Disney’s streaming service. The film’s halt can be seen as the end of the studio’s standalone film experiment, but can a film that was never... Читать дальше...

The Verge

California has agreed to delay the enforcement of its “gold standard” net neutrality bill, according to a statement from the law’s sponsor Sen. Scott Wiener. The net neutrality rules were set to go into effect next year, but California officials have agreed to wait until the courts have resolved any pending litigation over the Federal Communications Commission’s roll back of the federal rules late last year.

The Verge

Cesar Altieri Sayoc, the man who allegedly mailed a dozen bombs to George Soros, Hillary Clinton, and other political figures, may have also had a penchant for threatening his ideological enemies on Twitter. The account @hardrock2016, which appears to belong to Sayoc, sent veiled death threats to liberal “slime scum,” including Vice President Joe Biden, former New York attorney general candidate Zephyr Teachout; actor Jim Carrey; Portland, Oregon mayor Ted Wheeler; MIT Media Lab founder Nicholas... Snapchat brings its camera to the desktop to add filters to your streaming videos

Snap Camera, which is available today for Mac and Windows, will integrate with apps including Twitch, YouTube, Skype, and Zoom. With Snap Camera running, you’ll be able to use Snapchat’s filters — lenses, in Snap speak — while streaming a game of Fortnite or updating your co-workers on fourth quarter sales. For Snap, a move to the desktop represents a way to extend its reach into users’ lives, while harnessing... Читать дальше...

Apple isn’t selling its own cases for the iPhone XR, and that’s very strange

The Verge

For the first time in years, a new iPhone has hit the market without any first-party Apple cases for the company to sell alongside it. The lack of such an obvious accessory is odd. Apple has made no public comment on why it hasn’t prepped its usual silicone and leather case options for the XR’s launch. A clear case that was mentioned in the company’s press materials in some regions has also been a no-show. If you walk into an Apple Store today, you’ll find a few options from Otterbox and other brands, but none from Apple itself. Читать дальше...

Facebook removes Iran-linked accounts followed by more than 1 million people

The Verge

Facebook has identified more suspicious behavior on its platform linked to an ongoing Iranian influence campaign, the company announced today. In total, Facebook’s security team removed a combined 82 pages, groups, and accounts that were masquerading as US and sometimes UK citizens and organizations. Facebook prohibits “coordinated inauthentic behavior” on the platform, and due to this behavior’s proximity to the US midterm elections, the company says it promptly banned all instances of the network it discovered. GM challenges Trump administration to start a nationwide zero-emissions vehicle program

The Verge

General Motors is advocating for a new nationwide program that promotes electric cars and other zero-emissions vehicles. The so-called “National Zero Emission Vehicle (NZEV) program” would potentially put 7 million “long-range” EVs on the road by 2030 and reduce CO2 emissions by 375 million tons. GM is also calling for more investment into electric charging infrastructure, and it’s encouraging the government to support EV and battery technology in order to keep pace with countries like China.

Huawei revealed a new AI speaker at its Mate 20 event in China today, via Engadget. The design is blatantly similar to Apple’s HomePod, with mute, call, and volume control buttons on top of its cylindrical body and dark gray fabric covering. It’s the second smart speaker from Huawei. It unveiled the first look at its Alexa-enabled AI Cube last month, which looks like an elongated Google Home and is not at all cube-shaped.

Sean Bean is excited to see how he dies in Hitman 2

The Verge

For Hitman 2, developer IO Interactive is once again bringing back “elusive targets,” the tough-to-assassinate characters that are only available for a limited time, and you only have one chance to kill them. If you fail, you don’t get another shot. Things are starting out with a bang for the sequel: the first elusive target in Hitman 2 will be played by none other than Sean Bean, an actor who is notorious for regularly dying in film and TV roles.
