The Route: From New York City, take New York Interstate I-87 north to exit NY-28 West. What the passerby didn’t know was that in my family I am known as Wrong Way Waxler—and this drive was just beginning. About two-and-a-half hours out of NYC, the Phoenicia Diner shimmered in front of me like a mirage.

In 1983 after the critical and commercial failure of Atari’s E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial video game, the company allegedly dumped millions of cartridges into a landfill in Alamogordo, N.M. Most of the nearly four million annual visitors to California’s Yosemite National Park spend their time in Yosemite Valley, a postcard-worthy swath of land known for its granite Half Dome and—perhaps more notably—its bumper-to-bumper traffic come summer. Long before I became a travel writer, I was a front-desk staffer at Evergreen Lodge, on Yosemite’s western border.
In addition to the requisite joints hawking records and instruments, the city is home to amazing artisanal food purveyors, cutting-edge fashion designers, groundbreaking graphic artists, and other retailers offering one-of-a-kind wares. After 42 years on touristy Lower Broadway, Gregory Gruhn moved his legendary vintage store, Gruhn Guitars, to 8th Avenue South last year.

If you’re going to get bitten by a penguin, it might as well be on a sunny South African beach while you’re running away from one of the most brutal U.S. winters in recent years. Because you can wander the Western Cape for two weeks, and still not see the entire place unless you make a habit of mainlining espresso. Fun Fact: Everything in Cape Town is uphill.
By Chris Moody In March, Peruvian authorities began cracking down on visitors who felt the liberty to disrobe and streak the sacred grounds of Machu Picchu. “I almost killed them,” a frustrated tour guide who caught a couple running naked at Machu Picchu told me during a recent visit. You wouldn’t want someone running naked in your office.” The guide, a Peruvian who has visited Machu Picchu hundreds of times, looked at me. Visiting Machu Picchu today, you are free to wander in on your own at daybreak... Читать дальше...
Allow me to let you in on a little secret: there’s more to see and take in at Jazz Fest (a.k.a. the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival) than you could ever imagine, both on the festival grounds and in the areas surrounding it. Unless you’ve been, you might not know that Jazz Fest is held at a horse racing track (The Fairgrounds), surrounded almost entirely by a residential area known as the Mid-City neighborhood of New Orleans.
Casa Madaio, a creamery in the Cilento area near Naples, produces the mozzarella and burrata that the region is known for, but also some unique and exquisite cheeses from water buffalo milk. Barilotto doesn't offer a lot of aroma, but its moist, tender texture and lush creaminess create a distinctive signature. Look for it at the Pasta Shop (Oakland and Berkeley), Oliver's Markets in Santa Rosa, El Cerrito Naturals Annex and Oxbow Cheese Merchant in Napa. What an adventure: 11-plus years, hundreds of cheeses... Читать дальше...

[...] after more than a quarter century, as we retire the column, we're taking stock of which products and flavors captured our fancy - and which ones we wish we'd never tasted. Cola to caviar The foods ranged from fads like clear colas in the early 1990s to high-end items like caviar in 2007. Sometimes you choose a plant for its subtle foliage or its pastel flowers but there are times when one wants to go bold with a capital B. Add to the colors the fact the flowers have starburst lines encircling the center, making them look like miniature suns, and this plant has that wow factor in spades. Streptosolen is loud, boisterous and exuberant, and because mature plants will reach a size of 5 feet tall and 6 to 8 feet wide, it's not a shrub that you tuck into a corner of your garden. The...
