Supreme Court orders new trial for 2 convicted in '08 murder

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — Two men convicted of a 2008 murder should receive a new trial because prosecutors didn't turn over certain evidence to their defense attorneys until a week after their trial began, New Jersey's Supreme Court ordered Monday. The case involved the dying man's last words and his wife who may have plotted to have him killed. NEW YORK — Defense lawyers in New York City filed suit Monday over what they said was a “humanitarian crisis” in a troubled Brooklyn federal jail, where a heating system breakdown and a power failure led to inmates being locked down in frigid and dark cells. The suit, filed in federal court in Brooklyn on behalf of the federal public defenders’ office, said a decision by the jail to cut off inmates’ visits with their lawyers violates their constitutional rights.
