The rpoS gene confers resistance to low osmolarity conditions in Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi

Plos.org

by Eamon Gibbons, Mehbooba Tamanna, Bobby J. Cherayil

Salmonella enterica serovars Typhimurium and Typhi are enteropathogens that differ in host range and the diseases that they cause. We found that exposure to a combination of hypotonicity and the detergent Triton X-100 significantly reduced the viability of the S. Typhi strain Ty2 but had no effect on the S. Typhimurium strain SL1344. Further analysis revealed that hypotonicity was the critical factor: incubation in distilled water alone was sufficient to kill Ty2... Читать дальше...

Interacting active surfaces: A model for three-dimensional cell aggregates

Plos.org

by Alejandro Torres-Sánchez, Max Kerr Winter, Guillaume Salbreux

We introduce a modelling and simulation framework for cell aggregates in three dimensions based on interacting active surfaces. Cell mechanics is captured by a physical description of the acto-myosin cortex that includes cortical flows, viscous forces, active tensions, and bending moments. Cells interact with each other via short-range forces capturing the effect of adhesion molecules. We discretise the model equations using a finite element method... Читать дальше...

Exploring the genetic architecture of protein secretion in Komagataella phaffii (Pichia pastoris) for biotechnology applications

Plos.org

by Chantle Reiko Swichkow, Joshua S. Bloom, Leonid Kruglyak

Improvements to the production of proteins in industrial yeast species have largely relied on generating variation in a single genetic background. A new study in PLOS Biology leverages natural genetic variation to identify genes and variants with the potential to improve protein yield. Turning decisions into actions

Plos.org

by Alexander Gail

Are selection and control of action serial processes of separate neural modules? A new study in PLOS Biology argues against this and in favor of an integrated process distributed across multiple brain regions, each contributing in a distinct way. Are selection and control of action serial processes of separate neural modules? This Primer explores a study in PLOS Biology which argues against this and in favor of an integrated process distributed over multiple brain regions, each contributing in a distinct way.

Reflecting on 2022
