A novel Q-learning algorithm based on improved whale optimization algorithm for path planning

Plos.org

by Ying Li, Hanyu Wang, Jiahao Fan, Yanyu Geng

Q-learning is a classical reinforcement learning algorithm and one of the most important methods of mobile robot path planning without a prior environmental model. Nevertheless, Q-learning is too simple when initializing Q-table and wastes too much time in the exploration process, causing a slow convergence speed. This paper proposes a new Q-learning algorithm called the Paired Whale Optimization Q-learning Algorithm (PWOQLA) which includes four improvements. Читать дальше...

Number theory, borderline dimension and extensive entropy in distributions of ranked data

Plos.org

by Carlos Velarde, Alberto Robledo

The consideration of an existing stochastic approach for the reproduction of ranked data pointed at a formal equivalence between its key mathematical expression and that for trajectories at the tangent bifurcation. This fact led to a nonlinear dynamical approach for rank distributions that shows similarities with universality classes in critical phenomena. The renormalization group (RG) fixed-point map f*(x) for a tangent bifurcation of arbitrary nonlinearity... Читать дальше...

A new method of construction waste classification based on two-level fusion

Plos.org

by Lin Song, Huixuan Zhao, Zongfang Ma, Qi Song

The automatic sorting of construction waste (CW) is an essential procedure in the field of CW recycling due to its remarkable efficiency and safety. The classification of CW is the primary task that guides automatic and precise sorting. In our work, a new method of CW classification based on two-level fusion is proposed to promote classification performance. First, statistical histograms are used to obtain global hue information and local oriented gradients... Читать дальше...

Vitamin D knowledge and sun exposure practices among Sri Lankan healthcare undergraduates

Plos.org

by Guwani Liyanage, Sanjana Jayathunga, Thamara Amarasekara

Introduction

Although overexposure to ultraviolet radiation may lead to skin cancer, inadequate exposure results in vitamin D deficiency (VDD). We explored vitamin D-related knowledge and sun exposure practices among Sri Lankan healthcare undergraduates.

Methods

The sampling frame consisted of medical and allied health undergraduates in a single centre. A newly developed, pre-piloted, self-administered questionnaire collected data on vitamin D knowledge... Читать дальше...

Evolutionary game analysis of low-carbon technology innovation diffusion under PPP mode in China

Plos.org

by Chong Jia, Ruixue Zhang, Dan Wang

With the Public–Private Partnership (PPP) mode playing an increasingly important role in the investment of infrastructure, promoting the diffusion of low-carbon technology innovation in PPP projects not only helps to reduce the carbon emissions of infrastructure, but also plays an important demonstration role in the low-carbon transformation of construction industry. In order to clarify the evolutionary mechanism of low-carbon technology innovation diffusion... Читать дальше...

Nerve abnormalities in lumbar disc herniation: A systematic review and meta-analysis of diffusion tensor imaging

Plos.org

by Nan Wang, Daoxi Sun, Xiaoyu Zhang, Zhipeng Xi, Jingchi Li, Lin Xie

Purpose

The purpose of this study was to examine the values of fractional anisotropy (FA) and apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) in diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) for diagnosing patients with nerve impairment due to lumbar disc herniation (LDH).

Methods

A literature search of databases (PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane Library and Embase) was systematically performed to identify articles published before September 2021 that were relevant to this study. Читать дальше...

A street corner education: Stop and search, trust, and gendered norms among adolescent males

Plos.org

by Ben Bradford, Krisztián Pósch, Jonathan Jackson, Paul Dawson

Police stop and search activity has consistently been shown to affect the opinions, attitudes and behaviours of those subject to it. For young people in particular this can be an important moment in which they learn about and orientate themselves towards law, authority, and the exercise of power. Drawing on work into procedural justice and legal socialisation, we build on the premise that stop and search has, in practice, more... Читать дальше...

Bank liquidity and the risk-taking channel of monetary policy: An empirical study of the banking system in China

Plos.org

by Cong Wang, Lihuan Zhuang

This paper addresses the impact of bank liquidity on risk-taking behaviour of Chinese banks, and provides evidence for a risk-taking channel of monetary policy operating through bank liquidity. By using bank-level panel data from 123 Chinese commercial banks during 2003–2018, it is found that banks facing lower liquidity risk will be encouraged to take more risk. Moreover, loose monetary policy leads to more aggressive risk-taking by reducing the bank liquidity risk... Читать дальше...

Small group size promotes more egalitarian societies as modeled by the hawk-dove game

Plos.org

by Kai-Yin Lin, Jeffrey C. Schank

The social organization of groups varies greatly across primate species, ranging from egalitarian to despotic. Moreover, the typical or average size of groups varies greatly across primate species. Yet we know little about how group size affects social organization across primate species. Here we used the hawk-dove game (HDG) to model the evolution of social organization as a function of maximum group size and used the evolved frequency of hawks as a measure of egalitarian/despotism in societies. Infection control and radiation safety practices in the radiology department during the COVID-19 outbreak

Plos.org

by Mohamed M. Abuzaid, Wiam Elshami, H. O. Tekin

Rationale and objectives

Radiology personnel must have good knowledge, experience and adherence to radiation protection and infection control practices to ensure patient safety and prevent the further spread of the COVID-19 virus. This study analysed compliance and adherence to radiation protection and infection control during COVID-19 mobile radiography.

Methods

A cross-sectional using online survey was conducted from September to December 2021. Читать дальше...

Menstrual food restrictions and taboos: A qualitative study on rural, resettlement and urban indigenous Temiar of Malaysia

Plos.org

by Sharifah Zahhura Syed Abdullah

Menstruation is arguably the first stage in a woman’s reproductive cycle. Among the Temiar, as in many other traditional societies, menstruation represents a time during which a woman is considered to be vulnerable or polluted and there may be food or behavior avoidances and restrictions. The Temiar is one of the eighteen indigenous sub-ethnic groups in Peninsular Malaysia. The objective of this study was to examine the food restrictions and taboos imposed on menstruating Temiar women. Читать дальше...

Challenges in evaluating the accuracy of AI-containing digital triage systems: A systematic review

Plos.org

by Jonathan Ilicki

Introduction

Patient-operated digital triage systems with AI components are becoming increasingly common. However, previous reviews have found a limited amount of research on such systems’ accuracy. This systematic review of the literature aimed to identify the main challenges in determining the accuracy of patient-operated digital AI-based triage systems.

Methods

A systematic review was designed and conducted in accordance with PRISMA guidelines in October 2021 using PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science. Читать дальше...

Is the effectiveness of policy-driven mitigation measures on carabid populations driven by landscape and farmland heterogeneity? Applying a modelling approach in the Dutch agroecosystems

Plos.org

by Elżbieta Ziółkowska, Aaldrik Tiktak, Christopher J. Topping

The growing challenges of protecting biodiversity in agro-ecosystems and maintaining high agricultural productivity has become an important issue within the European Union, shaping both European and national agro-policies. The presented study is part of a broader evaluation of the interim targets of the 2013 Dutch policy plan on sustainable use of pesticides, carried out in 2019 by the PBL (Planbureau voor de Leefomgeving) Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency.
