Gene drive designs for efficient and localisable population suppression using Y-linked editors

Plos.org

by René Geci, Katie Willis, Austin Burt

The sterile insect technique (SIT) has been successful in controlling some pest species but is not practicable for many others due to the large number of individuals that need to be reared and released. Previous computer modelling has demonstrated that the release of males carrying a Y-linked editor that kills or sterilises female descendants could be orders of magnitude more efficient than SIT while still remaining spatially restricted, particularly if combined with an autosomal sex distorter. Fine-scale diversity of microbial communities due to satellite niches in boom and bust environments

Plos.org

by Yulia Fridman, Zihan Wang, Sergei Maslov, Akshit Goyal

Recent observations have revealed that closely related strains of the same microbial species can stably coexist in natural and laboratory settings subject to boom and bust dynamics and serial dilutions, respectively. However, the possible mechanisms enabling the coexistence of only a handful of strains, but not more, have thus far remained unknown. Here, using a consumer-resource model of microbial ecosystems, we propose that by differentiating... Читать дальше...

Towards a unification of the 2 meanings of “epigenetics”

Plos.org

by Sui Huang

The notion of epigenetic “marks” used by molecular biologists is conceptually disconnected from the idea of Waddington’s epigenetic “landscape” that is used by systems biologists and biophysicists. Recent advances suggest that these 2 distinct schools of thought could be united.

Seasonal timing on a cyclical Earth: Towards a theoretical framework for the evolution of phenology

Plos.org

by John S. Park, Eric Post

Phenology refers to the seasonal timing patterns commonly exhibited by life on Earth, from blooming flowers to breeding birds to human agriculture. Climate change is altering abiotic seasonality (e.g., longer summers) and in turn, phenological patterns contained within. However, how phenology should evolve is still an unsolved problem. This problem lies at the crux of predicting future phenological changes that will likely have substantial ecosystem consequences... Читать дальше...
