2 men killed in Torrance plane crash were from the South Bay
The two men killed in a plane crash at Zamperini Field in Torrance on Wednesday, Nov. 30, were identified by coroner’s officials on Thursday as two South Bay residents.
Douglas Happ, 81, of Redondo Beach and Gregg Low, 59, of Torrance were aboard the single-engine Arion Lightning when it went down near one of the Torrance Municipal Airport’s two runways about 11 a.m.

Happ was listed as the registered owner of an 2011 Arion Lightning, according to Federal Aviation Administration registration records. Before the crash, the plane appeared to be doing touch-and-goes, in which a pilot repeatedly practices landing and taking off, according to FlightAware, a website that tracks flights.
The pilot had been approved for a touch-and-go on the runway, according to audio from the Federal Aviation Administration tower at the airfield. The pilot acknowledged and repeated the message and did not radio in any signs of distress.
What caused the crash was being investigated by the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board.
