It was a bright autumn day at Montpelier, the Virginia home of James Madison, author of the U.S. Constitution. A guide had led a troop of tourists from the visitors' center to the mansion, using the architecture and furnishings of James and Dolley Madison's home as metaphors for elements of the Constitution.
